What is Unplugged Yoga’s Mission?

Following the recent events at the studio, I’ve been reminded by the Unplugged community why I started Unplugged in the first place. After five and a half years of being in operation, I realise the importance of revisiting your intentions and goals.

The mission and chief goal of Unplugged Yoga is and continues to be:

Connect to yourself and the people around you (your community);

Disconnect from busyness and distractions (and devices).

How did this all come about?

I went through a very challenging time in my life prior to starting Unplugged Yoga and believe it or not, I could barely use my voice or speak back then, nevermind stand in front of a class of students and teach.

In the midst of this time, I had a “moment” on my yoga mat one day and then one thing led to the next, and I signed up for a Teacher Training. Through this training, I finally met my people. People who were real and honest and I felt connection to myself and to the world around me (at last!).

I wanted to spread this feeling.. immediately! And so I opened the doors of Unplugged Yoga Studio months later.. to share this experience of love and connection. I believed back then the world would be a better place through yoga (union and connection) and years later, that mission statement still rings true.

When students walk through the doors of Unplugged, we don’t ask them what they do and who they are in the world, but rather how are they doing and how are they are feeling.

We ask students to connect to themselves and the people around them. Unplugged is a space of zero judgement and criticism. It is a space where you can be your most authentic self. It is a place of love and community.

We are making changes at Unplugged Yoga and I know change can be disruptive. But change is also a necessary part of growth and life. I firmly believe we are working toward an improved and more sustainable Unplugged.

And remember, despite the changes, the key message and mission of Unplugged Yoga studio remains the same:

Connect to yourself and the people around you (your community);

Disconnect from busyness and distractions (and devices).

With love and gratitude,

Shayne and the UP Yoga team xx
