What is Functional Breathing?
Functional breathing, simply put, is about cultivating healthy breathing habits. But what exactly does that mean? A healthy breath is one that you shouldn’t hear or see. Yet, how often do we experience the opposite, especially after a stressful day, when anxiety sets in, or when we've been told we snore at night.
Alana utilises scientifically proven techniques to retrain your body to breathe effectively. Her approach is grounded in nasal breathing—day and night, even during exercise training—and follows the 'LSD' principles: Light, Slow, and Deep breathing.
When we focus on breathing in this order, shallow breathers in time start to experience breathing driven low from the diaphragm (Deep), the snorers learn to breath the correct volume of air for their airway size (Light) and the people with the busy minds or anxiety learn the power of mind-body connection and nervous system regulation (Slow).
While many of us are aware of the movement of breath within the body (the Biomechanical), a crucial foundation often overlooked is the Biochemical aspect: how the gases in our body can enhance blood flow and oxygen delivery to our cells, tissues, organs, including the brain through healthy breathing. Unfortunately, most of us aren't fueling our bodies as efficiently as we could be because we've never been taught how to breathe effectively.
Who should learn Functional Breathing? And who is this workshop for?
Alana tailors her workshops and one-on-one sessions for individuals navigating the demands of daily life and health challenges. Whether you struggle with anxiety, stress, an overactive mind, sleep disorders like insomnia, snoring, or apnea, frequent nasal congestion, or persistent brain fog—learning to breathe as you did before stress or disease reshaped your habits is essential.
What will the workshop cover?
The session will include an education format via presentation and or print outs, with various breathing exercises woven in to demonstrate the different techniques that can be practiced to achieve a specific goal or overcome certain health challenges. We will then conclude with rolling all techniques into a beautiful relaxing short class like format where postures and body positions support the breath and nervous system.
